Prime Technology Invests in Layar
The Netherlands February 16, 2010 – PTV III, the third fund of Prime Technology Ventures announces today it has, together with Sunstone Capital, led an investment in Dutch Augmented Reality (AR) platform provider Layar (www.layar.com).
Layar provides a free augmented reality browser application which superimposes images, animations, text, links and other digital information on top of real-world objects in the mobile phone camera view. This allows users to visually acquire contextual information from their surroundings.
The company has built an active developer community around its application by embracing an open platform where third party developers can design their own ‘Layers’ according to the Layar protocol and API. Over 340 third-party Layars are currently active within the browser application.
Layar announced, during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the possibility for producers and publishers of AR content to offer their experiences for sale. The company has also reached agreement with one of the top 3 mobile handset manufacturers for a global distribution partnership, which will bring Layar capable phones to the mass market. This will enable tens of millions of people to experience Layar AR content on their mobile phones in 2010.
